About Me
Working With Lawyers Every Day

When I started to work with the city, I realized that I was going to be working alongside our attorneys every single day. While I was a little nervous around them at first, we quickly became friends and all of that anxiety melted away. It was really neat to see how many different subjects they could handle, and I realized just how necessary they were for helping me to manage various daily occurrences. On this website, I thought it would be really great to start talking about how to work with lawyers, and what it might mean for you and your family if you seek legal advice early.

What Are Field Sobriety Tests?

Cassandra Stone

If you have been pulled over because a police officer thinks that you were driving under the influence of a mind-altering substance, then you run the risk of being arrested and going to jail. There are a number of ways that the police officer can figure out whether or not you are under the influence. One of them is to use a series of field tests. The results of those field tests will help the officer to determine whether or not you are in an altered state.

Field Sobriety Tests

There are a number of field sobriety tests that an officer may do in order to assess your state. They may use one or more of them, depending on what your results are from the first tests. You do have the right to refuse to take them, but keep in mind that if you do refuse them, it is likely that you will be arrested and go to jail anyway. If the officer thinks that you are close to passing any of them, but they aren't sure, they may then bring out the Breathalyzer to check your BAC. Again, you can always refuse, but it may not be within your best interest to do so. So, what are some of the standard field sobriety tests that the officer might give you?

Horizontal Gaze

One of the tests is a horizontal gaze test. The way that this test is administered is that the officer will have you stand facing them, then ask you to follow a pen or a finger, without moving your head. They are going to be looking for several things. Those things can include the involuntary movements of your eyes that may make them look like they are jittery. They are also going to watch to see if your eyes mover slowly and if your head stays still. If you wear glasses, the officer may ask you to remove your glasses so that they can watch your eyes better.

Walk and Turn

This test involves you walking a straight line. The way that it works is that you will take a set number of steps, lining each heel up directly with the toe of the other foot, then turn around and walk the exact way back, with the exact number of steps. You will have to keep your arms down. This test checks your balance and how well you can follow directions.

If you have been pulled over for DUI, then you will probably need to have an attorney help you with that situation.
